Selection Process for September 2023: AUDITIONS
Getting Ready
The audition shortlist will be posted on our website at the end of the day on January 25 by application number. You will also receive an email from the school indicating your application number and audition time.
Helpful things to know:
- Audition Day is Thursday, February 9th and Friday, February 10th
- Location: Art Wing of Lord Byng Secondary, 3939 West 16th Avenue.
- Enter the Gallery foyer via the courtyard (Basketball courts) on 16th Avenue at Crown Street.
- Arrive 15 minutes before your first audition to register.
- There are up to 5 possible audition time slots each day, be sure to note your day, time and subject.
Specific Audition Instructions for Each Department
Drama
Ahead of the audition, get some rest and wear comfortable clothes. You will be asked to do a short monologue and play some improv games with your fellow applicants. Please click here to access the monologues: DRAMA MONOLOGUES
Students in Grades 10 and 11 will be applying for Theatre Company. This audition will happen at a later date and will use a different set of monologues. We will let you know when you can sign up for an audition time. Thank you for your patience.
Media Arts
You will sit for a short interview. You will be asked to comment on the work that you submitted in your application and respond to questions regarding media work provided by the interviewing teacher.
Band
For the audition students should prepare 2 contrasting pieces of music that showcase their ability with their chosen instrument. They should be prepared to sight read a selection of music. Please bring your music & instruments to the audition. (A piano and drum kit is available if required, students will play their selections unaccompanied). Choir
Choir applicants should prepare 2 contrasting pieces of music that showcase their vocal ability.
You may bring recorded music or someone to accompany you or sing unaccompanied

Strings
For the audition students should prepare 2 contrasting pieces of music that showcase their ability with their chosen instrument. They should be prepared to sight read a selection of music. Visual Arts
Shortlisted students will be invited to demonstrate their skills by completing a still life response. We will provide all the materials and provide a brief lesson ahead of the short 45 minute art session. Students will use oil pastels to draw the still life and watercolour to fill in the shapes. Literary Arts 11 to 12 (Current Grades 10 to 11)
Students will be asked to write a short response essay.
Applicants not shortlisted will be informed by email. We are sorry that we do not have space for everyone.
